Background
The Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, announced on Tuesday 2 February 2016 that he would be asking the President for an immediate dissolution of the 31st Dáil. A general election would be held on Friday 26 February 2016. This meant one of the longest Dálaí would be followed by one of the shortest election campaigns.
The election will be fought on new boundaries which mark one of the most radical changes in the electoral landscape for many years. The total number of TDs has been reduced from 166 to 158, and the number of constituencies from 43 to 40. A summary of these changes is available here.
