Born Gweedore, Co. Donegal 27th April 1945. Educated Colaiste Iosagain, Ballyvourney, Co. Cork; St. Patrick's Teacher Training College, Drumcondra, Dublin and UCD (BA, HDipEd). Full-time Public Representative and former Teacher. First elected February 1982 and at each subsequent election.

Appointed front bench spokesperson on Defence, June 2002. Member Joint Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women’s Rights. Spokesperson on Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands Feb 2001-May 2002. Junior spokesperson on the Islands, Gaeltacht and Western Development 2000-2001. Member British-Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body since 1993. Spokesperson on Gaeltacht and Emigrants Welfare 1991-1994. Front Bench spokesperson on the Gaeltacht 1988-1991. Spokesperson on Youth Affairs and Sport 1987-1988. Chairman, An Comhchoiste don Ghaeilge (Irish Language Committee) 1995-1997. Vice-Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Irish Language 1987. Member Donegal VEC. Member of the Board of Management of Pobal Scoil Ghaoth Dobhaire. Member Comhairle Raidio na Gaeltachta 1977-1980. Member National Teachers Organisation since 1965.
