Born Cork August 1960. Married to Mary O'Shea, two sons, one daughter. Educated Colaiste Chriost Ri, Cork and UCC (BA, HDipED, MA). Minister for Health and Children and former Secondary School Teacher. First elected 1989 and at each subsequent election.

Re-appointed Minister for Health & Children on 6th June 2002. Minister for Health & Children 2000-2002. Minister for Education 1997-2000. Fianna Fail Front Bench spokesperson on Education and the Gaeltacht 1995-1997. Former Chairman of the Oireachtas All Party Committee on the Irish Language. Member Cork Corporation 1985-1997 (Lord Mayor of Cork 1992-1993). Former member of the Governing Body, UCC and of the Governing Body RTC. Former member of the ASTI. Former National Chairman of Ogra Fianna Fail and was a member of the Commission on the Aims and Structures of Fianna Fail. Winner of the Cork Examiner Political Speaker of the Year Award 1987. Son of Paddy Martin, former International Boxer.
