Married to Cllr Heidi Bedell. Educated the High School, Dublin and Church of Ireland College of Education, Rathmines - Trinity College (BEd). Leader of the Green Party and former Teacher. Contested 1987 and 1989 general elections. First elected 1992 and at each subsequent election. Elected as the first leader of the Green Party on 6th October 2001. He contested the Dáil General Election in 1987 as a Green Alliance candidate in the old three seat constituency of Dublin North and the 1989 General Election as a Green Party candidate in the same constituency. He was elected a member of Dublin County Council in 1991 but resigned following his election to the Dail in line with Green Party policy on the dual mandate. Former Chairman of the Fingal District Committee. He is co-founder and board member of Sonairte, the Irish National Ecology Centre in Julianstown, Co. Meath. Member Amnesty International, the Irish Council Against Blood Sports, the Dublin Food Co-operative, the Irish Organic Farmers and Growers Association and the Organic Trust. He was a primary school principle before entering the Dáil and is a fluent Irish speaker. | |
