Born Malahide, Co. Dublin 3rd August 1947. Married to Monica Kane, two sons, one daughter. Educated Chanel College, Coolock, Dublin. Full-time Public Representative and former Food Retailer. First elected 1987. Unsuccessful candidate in 1989 and 1992 General Elections. Re-elected in 1997 and 2002.

Member Joint Committee on Arts, Sport, Tourism, Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. Member Council of Europe. Senator 1989-1997 and 1982-1983. Leader of the House 1991-1994. Leader of Fianna Fail in the Senate 1994-1997. Government Chief Whip in the Senate 1990-1991. Member of Dublin County Council 1985-1992, Fingal County Council since 1992 (leader of Fianna Fail group). Former Dublin County GAA Player. Former international basketball coach and player.
