Born Sligo July 1945. Single. Educated Summerhill College, Sligo - St Patrick's College, Maynooth and UCD. Full-time Public Representative and former Teacher. First elected 1992. Lost his seat in 1997.

Unsuccessful candidate in Labour Deputy Leadership election in Oct 2002. Appointed spokesperson on Justice Nov 2002. Member Joint Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women’s Rights. Senator 1989–1992 and 1997-2002. Party Leader of the Seanad and spokesperson on Education, Science, Trade and Employment, Sport and Finance 1997-2002. Member British-Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body since 1997. Chairman Labour’s Policy Development Commission since 1995. Member Dublin City Council since 1991. Deputy Lord Mayor 1991/92. Member City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee (Chairman 1993). Former President of the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland. Member Sean McDermott Street Community Association; Save Temple Street Children's Hospital Campaign; Vice-Chair Amnesty International (1984-87). Member of Board of Rotunda Hospital since 1999. Executive member of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (1976-1990). Founding member of Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (2002). Chairman Prisoners Rights Organisation 1975-1985.
