Born Kilkenny 19th April 1936. Single. Educated St. Kierans College, Kilkenny and UCD (Extra Mural Dip [Hons] in Social and Economic Science). Full-time Public Representative and former Trade Union Official. First elected 1961 and at each subsequent election and is now "Father of the House".

Elected Leas-Cheann Comhairle of the 29th Dáil on 18th June 2002. Ceann Comhairle 1997-2002. Minister of State, Department of Social Welfare 1983-1987. Member of Council of Europe and its Committees on Social and Legal Affairs 1989-1990. Member of the European Parliament 1981-1983. Labour spokesman on Education, Justice, Lands, Economic Planning and Development, the Marine and Energy (1961-1992). Member of Dáil Public Accounts Committee 1973-1977. Member of Kilkenny Corporation 1964-1997 (Mayor 1967, 1976, 1992). Member of Kilkenny County Council 1964-1997 (Chairman 1975, 1980). Son of James P Pattison, TD 1932-1951, 1954-1957.
