In 1985 all the unionist MPs in Northern Ireland resigned in protest at the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement. At the subsequent by elections, the fictitious candidate of Peter Barry was nominated where the outgoing unionist candidate would otherwise have been returned unopposed. The real Peter Barry was the Republic of Ireland's minister for foreign affairs at the time. |
