On 2 April 2008, announced his intention to step down as Taoiseach and leader of Fianna Fail. Gave his formal resignation to President Mary McAleese on the evening of 6 May 2008, although he remained as Taoiseach until the election and appointment of his successor, Brian Cowen, on the following day. Following the report of the Mahon Tribunal he indicated in a newspaper article published on 25 March 2012 that he would resign from Fianna Fáil ahead of a meeting that was expected to expel him from the party. |
