Born in Bray, County Wicklow. Educated at Scoil na Leanbh, An Rinn, County Waterford, Synge Street Christian Brothers School, Dublin, University College, Dublin and Kings Inns. Irish language editor of the "Irish Press" (1931-40). Called to the Bar in 1934 and to the Inner Bar in 1945. Attorney General (1946-48 and 1951-53). Appointed Judge of the Supreme Court in 1953 and Chief Justice (1961-73). Following Ireland's accession to the European Community, became Judge at the European Court of Justice 1973; appointed President of the First Chamber of the Court in 1974. President of Ireland (1974-76). Resigned from office 22 October 1976. |
